Tool: Systems Mapping

What is it, when to use it, why is it beneficial to do so

Systems mapping is a process of constructing a model of a system for the purposes of analysis, intervention, and stakeholder communication. Whilst there are many methods to map a system, we introduce here a causal model, essentially, a theory of why a system performs the way it does. It views the system through the lens of the past and present system to uncover the structures — the “rules” of the system. This current state includes both the desirable and undesirable structures and their associated outcomes.

Complexity, in its many forms, can limit an individual’s ability to effectively understand and then intervene in social systems, which are inherently complex. Systems mapping is a tool for interveners, both individuals and collectives, to think about, communicate, and act on the basis of a shared understanding of the complex system they aim to transform.

We recommend that this tool is delivered by an expert systems mapper, who can lead you through the process.
